MATH
For the next two weeks (May 14-May 25th) We will be working on Geometry. Students will be expected to use a protractor to measure angles inside of shapes.
Curriculum Expectations:
• identify and classify two-dimensional shapes by side and angle properties, and compare and sort three-dimensional figures;
• identify and construct nets of prisms and pyramids;
• identify and classify acute, right, obtuse, and straight angles
• measure and construct angles up to 90º, using a protractor;
• identify triangles (i.e., acute, right, obtuse, scalene, isosceles, equilateral), and classify them according to angle and side properties;
• construct triangles, given acute or right angles and side measurements (Sample problem: Use a protractor, ruler, and pencil to construct
a scalene triangle with a 30° angle and a side measuring 12 cm.
LANGUAGE
Moving into May, we will be continuing to write paragraphs and mini essays using the template of informational writing. The students will be graded on their writing in Science and Social Studies. Editing and making revisions of their work will continue to be a focus as well.
SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES
We will be completing Science and Social Studies together this month. Social Studies will be Ancient Egypt, and Science will be a focus on Energy. Please se upcoming events for projects for these two subjects.
Phys. Ed
Students are expected to bring their gym clothes and shoes each time we have gym. Students who do not bring their clothes will be unable to participate in Phys. ed that day. Students who forget frequently cannot be assessed on their skills and this will effect their report card. Each student was given a Timetable with their scheduale on it. I have attached the timetable for your convineince below.

There will be no spelling for the next two weeks (May 14 and the holiday Monday week).
Homework Policy
Homework! The one thing every child enjoys!
I try not to overwhelm the students with Homework. Work that is not completed in class will be sent home for Homework and is expected to be completed that night for the lesson the next day. I do not do daily Homework checks, as with 28 students it takes far too long. However, I will on occasion, give the students random Pop Quizzes to check if they have completed their work.
Sometimes, I will send home extra homework with the students if they need review on a concept, or if they've demonstrated that they need more work by chatting too much during our work time in class.
Students are expected to read for 20 mins every night. They can read anything that interests them during that time. we are looking to foster an environment where students enjoy the act of reading. Spelling words should also be studied nightly to decrease the amount of work needed on a Thursday night before the Quiz Friday.
For major assignments, I will be sure to paste the details and the due date on the website so that you have access to what is expected of your child.
Vacation Time!!!
On occasion, families plan vacations during the instructional days of the school year. In the case of extended absence, it is difficult for teachers to provide all of the work that will be missed as the pace of the class depends on the learning of the students. I can give you a basic overveiw of what units your child will be missing with a few activities to do, but they will miss the lessons that accompany those sheets.
It is an expectation that the student will have those materials completed upon his/her return to school so that the unit can proceed. With some subject areas, such as Mathematics, a student may be absent during a certain Math strand. In such a case, the student’s report card would indicate this absence, i.e., I - "Incomplete", with an explanation in the comment section that the student has been absent for that particular strand. If a child is to be away beyond a week’s time, the school has an Extended Absence Form that is requested to be completed prior to the absence. Also, if families are planning a vacation during the school year, please let your child’s teacher know well in advance. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!

Here are some steps for solving problems:
- Highlight the important information in the problem.
- Decide if the problem is asking you to add, subtract, multiply or divide.
- Show all of your work.
- Check your work using the opposite operation OR by rounding.
- Explain how you got your answer.
Read each question carefully and make sure to show your work and explain your thinking.
