Welcome!

Thank you for your patience while I configured our class website!

Welcome to our Grade 5 class website! Please check the website frequently, as it will be updated and used as a useful communication tool this year. All information on the calendar in terms of homework should also be in your child's agenda as the children are given the opportunity to write their homework down at the end of each day from our Homework Board.

Your child's agenda should be up to date with the website, however if it is not, this allows you as a parent to start valuable communication with your child on the importance of keeping his/her agenda up to date so that communication from school is reaching home. Students should not rely soley on the website for their homework assignments.

The school website is also important to check as monthly newsletters are posted keeping you up to date with the events happening at Eagle Ridge as well as valuable communication between school and home.

    Websites

Here are some websites that your child may find useful or fun this year!

A Great Online resource for Math Worksheets - www.mathfrog.ca

A Reading website: This site is cool because it will read the story to the student.  http://my.abdodigital.com

Grolier Online: http://go-kids.grolier.com  Username: durham   Password: research12

Here is another website your child may find useful:

    Homework

    Homework Policy

Homework! The one thing every child enjoys!

I try not to overwhelm the students with Homework. Work that is not completed in class will be sent home for Homework and is expected to be completed that night for the lesson the next day. I do not do daily Homework checks, as with 28 students it takes far too long. However, I will on occasion, give the students random Pop Quizzes to check if they have completed their work.

Sometimes, I will send home extra homework with the students if they need review on a concept, or if they've demonstrated that they need more work by chatting too much during our work time in class.

Students are expected to read for 20 mins every night. They can read anything that interests them during that time. we are looking to foster an environment where students enjoy the act of reading. Spelling words should also be studied nightly to decrease the amount of work needed on a Thursday night before the Quiz Friday.

For major assignments, I will be sure to paste the details and the due date on the website so that you have access to what is expected of your child.

    Extended Absence

    Vacation Time!!!

On occasion, families plan vacations during the instructional days of the school year. In the case of extended absence, it is difficult for teachers to provide all of the work that will be missed as the pace of the class depends on the learning of the students. I can give you a basic overveiw of what units your child will be missing with a few activities to do, but they will miss the lessons that accompany those sheets.

It is an expectation that the student will have those materials completed upon his/her return to school so that the unit can proceed. With some subject areas, such as Mathematics, a student may be absent during a certain Math strand. In such a case, the student’s report card would indicate this absence, i.e., I - "Incomplete", with an explanation in the comment section that the student has been absent for that particular strand. If a child is to be away beyond a week’s time, the school has an Extended Absence Form that is requested to be completed prior to the absence. Also, if families are planning a vacation during the school year, please let your child’s teacher know well in advance. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter!
